Cameron Moniz and Danang Climbing Gym

Behind the Biz: Entrepreneur Spotlight #1 🌟

This week, we shine the spotlight on Cameron Moniz, a seasoned entrepreneur who has made Vietnam his home for the past nine years. Having spent years as a business owner, Cameron brings a wealth of experience to the table.

From the vibrant world of travel…

His entrepreneurial journey began seven years ago when he observed a growing market for outdoor activities among Western tourists coming in from Hoi An. With a keen eye for opportunity, Cameron discovered hidden waterfalls and developed hiking tours that quickly gained popularity, thanks in part to Airbnb's platform.

The COVID-19 pandemic then brought the tourism industry to a standstill, forcing Cameron to pause his tour company. Yet, his entrepreneurial spirit remained undeterred. Seeking a new challenge, he channeled all his energy into a new venture: Danang Climbing Gym.

His latest venture, Danang Climbing Gym, is a testament to his passion for the sport and his ability to transform an idea into a thriving business. However, the journey wasn’t without its challenges. Here are two crucial lessons he learned along the way:

1️⃣ Never underestimate the power of community!

“A lot of time and resources could have been saved if I had first vetted one of our early business connections with the climbing community,” he reflects. “Always check out potential business partners with the network to validate if they are reliable and have a good working reputation! Community is so valuable for that kind of soft information that saves a lot of frustration.”

💡👉 Vet your business partners with the community before jumping in headfirst. Don’t overlook the power of networking and building relationships within your industry!

2️⃣ Market research is KEY!

Cameron also stresses the significance of thorough market research. “I initially focused on expats and Vietnamese University students, but it turned out that children were the primary demographic, making up 80% of my customers,” he explains. “If I should have done more research beforehand, I would definitely build more kid-friendly zones.”

💡👉 Understanding your target market in depth is always a priority! Even for niche markets like bouldering, there's always a sub-niche waiting to be discovered. Who knew there was a whole world of kid climbers out there?! 🤯

Cameron’s story is a reminder that entrepreneurship is a journey filled with both triumphs and setbacks.
